LytixGuides › Good profit margin

What is a good profit margin for a Shopify store?

The honest answer has a range: 5% net is low, 10% is average, 20% is high. But the median 7-figure DTC brand nets around 3%. Here is how to benchmark yourself without lying to yourself.

The headline benchmarks

Shopify's own widely cited rule of thumb: 5% net margin is low, 10% is average, 20% is high. Analyses of public-company DTC data add a harsher note: the median DTC gross margin is about 57%, while the median net margin for 7-figure brands has hovered around 3%.

That gap between 57% gross and 3% net is everything this site writes about: ads, fees, shipping, discounts and returns. If your gross margin is fine and your net is thin, the leak list in sales but no profit is the place to start.

Margins vary wildly by category

Benchmark against your own category, not a universal number. Typical gross margin ranges:

What to aim for, practically

A useful target for a growing DTC brand is a contribution margin of 20 to 30% after variable costs and acquisition. Below that, growth consumes cash faster than it creates it.

Margins are also under structural pressure in 2026: rising Meta CPMs, tariffs and carrier surcharges. Which means margin work compounds: a 3-point improvement in margin is worth more than a 3-point improvement in ROAS. Compute where you stand with the free margin calculator.

Common questions

Is 20% net margin realistic for ecommerce?

It is exceptional, not typical. Most healthy stores land between 5 and 12% net; the median 7-figure DTC brand is closer to 3%. Category matters enormously.

Why is my net margin so much lower than my gross margin?

Ad spend, payment fees, shipping, discounts, returns and apps sit between the two. A 57% gross margin ending as single-digit net is the industry norm, not a personal failure.

Should I benchmark against Amazon sellers?

No. Fee structures differ: Shopify merchants typically net 10 to 20% where Amazon sellers net 5 to 15%, and the cost stacks are not comparable line by line.
